The outer face of the lock should have the name Weiser or Kwikset imprinted on it and to the left of the keyhole there should be a small rectangular slot which accepts the tool that came with the lock for rekeying purposes. If this rectangular slot does exist then it definitely is a "Smart Key" type lock.

What is a Lock Rekey?
A Lock Rekey is the process that a Professional Locksmith goes through in order to change the key that currently operates your lock.

How is a Lock Rekey Accomplished?
Each chamber of a Pin Tumbler type lock contains a spring and two pins, a top or driver pin and a bottom pin. A Pin Tumbler type lock is available with either five, six or seven chambers. Every cut in your key corresponds with the length of each bottom pin and each chamber sequentially.

When a Professional Locksmith performs a Lock Rekey he is essentially changing the pins that correspond with the cuts in your key. Changing these pins allows a new and different key to operate your lock and renders the old key useless.

How long does it take to Rekey a Lock?
Generally speaking, a Lock rekey takes approximately 15 minutes. That is the time required to remove the lock from your door, disassemble the lock to change the pins that currently operate it, cut the keys, reassemble the lock and replace it on your door.

In some instances extra time may be required if there is associated door hardware that needs to be removed in order to access the Lock Cylinder like a Panic Bar, or, as some like to refer to it as, Crash Bar.

There is some confusion associated with the preception of the term "Master Key".

If you are referring to a Residential home setting, then you likely mean the term "Keyed Alike Locks". This means that all the locks on your property are set to, and operate with, the same key.

A Master Key System is usually found in a Hotel / Motel, Hi-Rise Residential, Commercial or Institutional setting.

We recommend that any exterior door locks, weather it be a Residential, Commercial or Institutional setting not be Master Keyed because of the ease with which a Master Keyed Lock can be picked. The other issue that exists is that a Master Keyed Lock, with a Master Pin in each of five chambers, will allow 32 different keys to operate the lock.

That depends on a few factors. If the locks are all manufactured by the same company and the key(s) that you have will physically fit into every lock then it is likely that this can be accomplished. If not, then it would have to be determined exactly how many locks can work together with the same type of key and then replace the others to correspond with the majority of locks you now have that will work together.
